Epic: the next-gen bet heavily on Free 2 Play

During the Conference Game Horizon in the United Kingdom, Mark Rein of Epic Games showed that both the next-gen console will focus heavily on Free 2 Play model, which provides for the release of free titles with numerous add-on fee in order to continue/complete/improve the gaming experience: a model that is showing great potential on mobile games and web-based ones. Already a year ago Crytek had announced once completed its current projects would be dedicated only to F2P, and have already been announced several titles that will exploit this system. Following are excerpts of statements by Rein.

"The next-generation consoles are going to embrace the model Free 2 Play, so I have warned: Sony and Microsoft will focus heavily on that, I'm saying what is being said to us developers."

"I think PS4 and Xbox next will have to learn from Google and Apple on how to make games more" convenient "for the public. In particular I think the console should make things as simple as possible by improving their interfaces and their capacity of media center. Of course must also be better platforms for games: should make sure that the game is downloaded from the cloud, and that you can access from any console, register with your details and you can immediately play boom. I think they can make games cheaper, because they know that if a game is played more convenient " .

It only remains to wait for further developments, and when even Micorsoft will reveal his plans during the presentation of 21 May will probably also new info on its projects Free 2 Play.
