XBOX Disc to Digital is coming to everyone: disc games become digital licenses

After a few weeks of testing reserved for XBOX Insiders, XBOX's highly appreciated Disc to Digital function is now available globally for all users. We will therefore be able to transform a large part of our physical collection of XBOX One and XBOX Series X games into digital licenses associated with our account, and continue to play them even on devices without an optical drive, starting with XBOX Series S.

The process is simple and automatic: just insert the disc into an XBOX One or XBOX Series X equipped with a player and connect it to your account. From that moment the game will appear in the library with a special Disc-to-Digital badge, and we will be able to download and start it without the need for the physical support in the console. Those who want to convert many games at once can speed up the operations by disabling the automatic disc start option, which is located in the profile and system settings. In this way, the console will not launch the game every time it is inserted and will not start the installation, avoiding us having to return to the dashboard every time. The operation will still take some time, but it will be much smoother.

The benefits extend beyond consoles as well. If the converted game supports XBOX Play Anywhere, we'll also unlock digital access on PC via the XBOX app and on handheld consoles, with saves and achievements shared across platforms. Those who own a disc collection and a ROG Ally XBOX X, for example, will now be able to take their physical library with them.

However, there are some limitations to be aware of. At the moment, only XBOX One and XBOX Series X games compatible with the program are supported, while the titles of the first XBOX and XBOX 360 are excluded. In the case of games distributed on multiple discs, only the first is used for identification.

But above all, the disc must remain in your possession, because the digital license remains linked to it: if we give it away or sell it, as soon as the new owner inserts it on their console, the license will be revoked to be associated with the new account. It will therefore not be possible to buy a game, obtain the digital version and then resell it. Microsoft has also specified that the list of supported titles is not definitive: "Eligibility may vary for technical, licensing, editorial, production or other reasons, and Microsoft may change it over time."

However, the list of compatible games is already very extensive. Thanks to the checks of the XCT.live community, 1,525 convertible disc titles have been identified so far, 274 of which also support XBOX Play Anywhere, and the list will be updated regularly.

The arrival of the feature for everyone has been greeted with enthusiasm on social media and is an important step for the preservation of video games, as well as good news for those who have a physical collection and would like to switch to a console without a reader. The catalog of compatible titles is set to grow further in the coming weeks and months.
