Gears of War E-Day: all the details from the Direct event

After the gameplay shown at the XBOX Games Showcase, the Gears of War: E-Day Direct has finally broken the veil of mystery on the new chapter of the historic XBOX saga: here is the most important information we have discovered.

Gears of War: E-Day brings us an exciting tale of the origins of characters like Marcus and Dom, as well as introducing us to new ones. Twenty years after the title that started it all, the team wanted to bring us back to Emergence Day, focusing everything on emotional weight, brotherhood and an experience completely rebuilt from scratch. It will not simply be a nostalgia operation, but a profound reinterpretation of the franchise that mixes intimate narrative, dynamic exploration and deeply revised combat, all designed to restore that feeling of discovery and tension that characterized the first games in the series.

A return to the origins: the birth of the Bravo Team

The beating heart of the adventure will be the relationship between Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago, portrayed here well before the legendary friendship we met in the original trilogy. Veterans of the Pendulum Wars and marked by the recent loss of Carlos Santiago, Dom's brother and Marcus' best friend, the two protagonists will share an initially distant and fractured bond. We will have to witness the birth of their brotherhood as the world collapses (literally) under our feet, joining forces with the veteran Mags Carter, and the young communications cadet Lucas Reyes, to form the Bravo Squad.

The narrative will never abandon the point of view of this quartet, showing us the invasion of the Locusts exclusively through their eyes. In the first moments we will have to face pure terror and confusion, facing unknown ferocious and nameless creatures to which the soldiers themselves will give nicknames on the spot. Only as the three days in which the campaign takes place go by, the threat will evolve from an almost zombie horde to an organized, armed and communicating army, radically changing the perception of the conflict.

Kalona under siege: a city that changes in real time

The whole story will take place in the city of Kalona, a thriving industrial hub thanks to the Imulsion that we will see crumble in real time. Although it is not an open world, we will have to explore large and interconnected districts, where each passage in the same areas will show progressive degradation and increasingly devastated scenarios. The city will not be a simple background, but a character in its own right: we will have to react to dynamic events, such as civilians to be rescued from collapsing buildings or soldiers to be supported in ambushes, choosing how and when to intervene.

To make everything more unpredictable there will be a dynamic destruction system that will not raze entire skyscrapers to the ground, but will progressively erode shelters, pillars and barricades under prolonged fire. Even the dreaded "wormholes" will no longer be placed in fixed and memorable points: we will have to adapt to chasms that will open in random areas of the map, forcing us to rethink tactics on the spot and use grenades to seal the leaks before the area is invaded.

Movement and combat reinvented: slides, jumps and new weapons

To navigate such vertical and responsive environments, the movement underwent a major overhaul. For the first time in the series we will have to master the slide, useful for slipping under obstacles, reaching cover or surprising enemies, and a jump system calibrated to favor verticality without turning the experience into a frenetic platformer. We will have to take advantage of leaps on higher ledges and new low covers, which will expose us more during firefights but will offer fundamental tactical breaks to break the static nature of the exchanges of blows.

The combat system that has always defined the franchise expands thanks to a revised arsenal and new entries: alongside the classic Gnasher and Longshot, we will have to manage the Gut Puncher, a manual detonation grenade launcher perfect for hitting behind cover, and the Incinerator, an Imulsion-powered shotgun that melts enemies instantly. The chainsaw Lancer will also have its narrative origin, born as a prototype assembled in an emergency during the first days of the invasion. The freedom of approach will be total: we will be able to opt for frontal assaults, side flanks or elevated stakeouts, coordinating with the team to create sequences worthy of an action movie.

Rebuilt from the ground up: the power of Unreal Engine 5 at the service of the atmosphere

All this was made possible by The Coalition's decision to literally start from an "empty hard drive", abandoning code and assets inherited from previous games to build Gears of War: E-Day completely from scratch, on Unreal Engine 5. Every animation, model, sound and environment has been created from scratch, allowing to achieve a high level of fidelity while maintaining the rough and recognizable identity of the protagonists. The support for real-time ray tracing and the implementation of MegaLights, one of the first titles to exploit it, will immerse us in an atmosphere with strong horror tones, played on sharp contrasts between light and shadow and on an artistic direction that enhances the melancholy and brutality of the conflict. The technical target is ambitious: we will have to expect a solid 60 FPS for the campaign and 120 FPS for the competitive modes, ensuring perfect responsiveness in every situation. Of course, we are waiting to find out how this will perform on Xbox Series X and S.

Co-op, multiplayer and dates to mark on the calendar

The cooperative component remains a fundamental pillar of the game. We will be able to face the entire campaign in four-player online co-op from the first minute, without having to unlock preliminary tutorials, and we will enjoy the return of the two-player split-screen mode, a choice strongly desired to preserve the couch experience.

Competitive multiplayer will see the return of 4v4 Versus on symmetrical Kalona-inspired maps, enhanced by new movement options and a seasonal roadmap of content that can be unlocked simply by playing. The real novelty, however, is Horde Siege, a twelve-player PvE mode that will see us defend the city in larger and more connected arenas, evolving the classic formula for an era in which co-op against the environment is more in demand than ever.

For those who want to test the field before launch, the Open Beta will kick off on August 6 , with early access to the first weekend guaranteed to those who pre-order or those who are already subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate.

The actual Emergence Day will arrive on October 6, when Gears of War: E-Day will close the circle of a twenty-year legacy, telling us again the stories of some of the most characteristic and beloved characters in the world of video games. Keep following us for more news on the title!
