Senua: all the details on Ninja Theory's new action-adventure
Ninja Theory presented Senua as a project that marks a clear evolution compared to the previous chapters of the series. If Senua's Saga: Hellblade II had consolidated an intimate and strongly cinematic narrative approach, this new title fully embraces the action-adventure genre, promising to expand every aspect of the gameplay without betraying the soul that has made the franchise famous. Studio head Dom Matthews shared numerous details about the creative direction, revised mechanics and vision behind this ambitious production, making it clear how the team intends to balance innovation and tradition.
A new creative course and the strength of the entire studio
The decision to abandon the "Hellblade III" numbering in favor of the simple Senua is not a marketing choice, but reflects the desire to offer an experience with completely different intentions. The narrative heart, the atmosphere and the high production quality remain the foundation of the project, but the focus shifts towards greater agency and more structured gameplay, designed to satisfy both those who loved the previous chapters and those looking for a deeper and more lasting interaction with the game world.
This turning point was possible thanks to a fundamental internal reorganization: for the first time in over twelve years, the entire staff of Ninja Theory, made up of 85 developers, works concentrated on a single title. A strategic choice that also led to the difficult decision to definitively shelve Project Mara, channeling all the resources and skills accumulated over the years, from the time of DmC: Devil May Cry to Heavenly Sword, to realize the full potential of this new adventure.
Development times were deliberately contained: activities started as early as September 2024, taking advantage of established pipelines and Unreal Engine 5 to ensure a quick but curated release. A philosophy that the studio intends to maintain for future projects, maintaining balanced production cycles that allow it to continue to take creative risks without increasing costs in an unsustainable way.
Tactical combat, weapons and boss fights
The combat system has been completely overhauled to offer what the developers call a "tactical choice". We will no longer have to limit ourselves to frontal clashes with a heavy pace, but we will have to evaluate each situation with different strategies, deciding whether to engage enemies directly, exploit the surrounding environment or opt for a stealthy approach to eliminate threats without alerting the entire group. The clashes now involve the management of several opponents at the same time, with a marked verticality and the possibility of using environmental elements to our advantage.
Senua's arsenal expands considerably: in addition to the main sword, we will be able to recover weapons from enemies or find them scattered in the environment, such as short or long axes, flaming torches and throwing objects. Many of these can be wielded together with the main weapon for a dynamic dual-wielding system, allowing us to adapt to the flow of battle and experiment with lethal combinations. To crown this mechanical depth, Ninja Theory has confirmed the inclusion of spectacular fantasy boss fights, designed to test all the skills acquired and to offer moments of pure visual and tactical adrenaline.
Skills Focus, exploration, and the interconnected world
Alongside the combat there will be the Focus Skills, powers derived from Senua's beliefs and perception of reality, which we will have to activate freely during clashes, puzzle solving and exploration. One of these allows you to "shatter" reality, useful both for unlocking new areas and for controlling the crowd in combat, repelling enemies and gaining precious time to reorganize our strategy.
The game world has been redesigned as a single, interconnected map, about twice the size of Senua's Saga: Hellblade II. While maintaining a linear narrative structure, the environment opens up considerably, inviting us to return to familiar places and spend time exploring. Exploration has been made snappier and freer, with adjustable movement speed and an expanded moveset that includes frequent jumping, climbing, and vaulting.
Exploration will be rewarding and closely linked to perception: seemingly insignificant elements, such as a tree with a particular shape, can reveal special powers or open secret passages as Senua's vision evolves. We will have to observe the environment with the same lens as her psychosis, learning to believe in the world exactly as the protagonist does to discover every hidden secret.
Plot, setting and the mystery of the golden wave
From a narrative point of view, Senua is placed temporally after the events of the first two chapters, transporting us into a vision of Purgatory modeled on memories of the protagonist's homeland. Trapped between life and death, Senua embarks on a journey to reach the afterlife and reunite with loved and lost people, convinced that healing the wounds of her past is the key to opening the doors of eternal peace.
Despite the deep ties to the previous lore, the tale has been structured to be fully accessible even to those who have never faced the saga, welcoming newcomers without sacrificing the depth expected by longtime fans. A recurring visual element in the material shown is a golden wave that seems to threaten to engulf Senua: this insidious but beautiful force represents the risk of losing one's beliefs and, at the same time, what the protagonist could become, acting as the central theme and common thread of the entire experience.
With the entire studio working on a clear vision and well-established technologies, the anticipation to find out how all these innovations will merge into a single coherent adventure is at the highest levels. Keep following us for all the news!
