Borderlands 4: endgame content and post-launch plans revealed
Gearbox explains that weekly missions with challenges, Specializations to unlock to customize equipment and the great return of the Superior Vault Hunter Mode await us. The latter has been completely revisited: to progress through its five levels of increasing difficulty we will no longer have to replay the entire campaign, but face specific challenge missions designed to test our builds. A change that streamlines progression and allows us to focus on hunting down the desired equipment.
Each rank of the Superior Vault Hunter Mode will give us access to exclusive Firmware, real set bonuses for our equipment that we will begin to discover already during the story. As you accumulate more firmware, you'll get more and more stat bonuses. These upgrades can only be transferred once to another item, but the operation will destroy the original item and make the bonus no longer transferable.
To keep interest high, several rotating activities have been introduced: the Weekly Wildcards will offer us missions with a guaranteed Legendary reward, while in the Weekly Encore Boss, Moxxi will choose a boss to upgrade, offering us improved drop percentages in exchange for Eridium. Maurice's Black Market Machine will also return, which will push us to explore Kairos in search of its hidden loot. All of these activities will support specific online matchmaking, so you can easily find other players with the same goals as you.
Gearbox also laid out a robust post-launch content roadmap, which will include both free updates and paid DLC. The latter will be divided into two categories: History Packs and Bounty Packs. The first Story Pack announced, titled "Mad Ellie and the Crypt of the Damned," will see the return of the beloved Ellie in a cosmic horror-themed adventure. This DLC will introduce a new region of Kairos to explore, new quests, new legendary gear, and the first additional playable Vault Hunter, as well as numerous cosmetic items. The Bounty Packs, on the other hand, will be narrative missions that will deepen the knowledge of the new characters we will meet on Kairos, starting with Rush, leader of the Outbounders. Each pack will include new quests, a boss, gear, cosmetics, and a Vault Card to unlock additional rewards.
Finally, there will be free content for all players. Starting in October, Seasonal Mini-Events, such as "Horrors of Kairos", will kick off, adding Legendary Weapons, cosmetics, and Weather Variants. Invincible Bosses will also be making their return, challenging us in new high-level arenas and rewarding us with powerful unique weapons. The arrival of each Invincible Boss will be accompanied by the release of a new difficulty level, the Supreme Superior Vault Hunter Mode.
