Eurogamer: Xbox One designed to last at least 10 years and be quiet
Obviously this does not mean that the console should stay on, but only if someone decides not to ever turn it off, it is designed to withstand a use of this type. The heat dissipation system and the size of the console are therefore designed to ensure a long life of the machine, the designers wanted at all costs to avoid problems had the launch of Xbox 360 with Red Ring of Death which caused the company losses of over one billion dollars.
Another reason for the relatively large size of console-which are estimated to be about 34x26x8cm -are in the desire to make it totally silent; Xbox One assembles a large fan that can efficiently dissipate the heat even turning very slowly and then producing little noise. Some developers have explained to Digital Foundry that the devkit does not have ignition lights, and when you're running multimedia applications or in the dashboard, it is practically impossible to understand if the console is on or off because they do not produce any noise. When you start the games instead of the fan increases speed and starts to be audible, but-according to site sources remains much lower noise levels than those to which we are accustomed today's consoles.
Eurogamer concluded by explaining that another aspect on which Microsoft has commissioned focus was the immediacy of the experience: we wanted to create a system that would allow to play with very low waiting times in the order of a few seconds, and both the task switching system that can "hibernate" a game and then continue it at any time as you do on modern portable consoles are part of this vision. Apparently this is a point on which Microsoft will make a lot of pressure at the GamesCom, between three weeks.
