Blizzard announces Diablo V for Spring 2029; Sanctuary fell and Diablo won
The starting point of the story is as simple as it is unsettling: the heroes of the past have failed, Sanctuary has fallen and Diablo has won. As explained by Blizzard representatives on stage, the entire game revolves around a question: "What must you become when the world has already fallen?". The Lord of Terror, in short, is no longer the remote threat that patiently waits at the end of the adventure: he is present from the very beginning and actively shapes the story, the world and our path. From the throne of Westmarch he conquered Sanctuary as the first step towards the invasion of the High Heavens, and uses the surviving population and its souls as weapons in the Eternal Conflict.
In the game, we'll take on the role of the Heir of Westmarch, fleeing through the incinerated remains of a kingdom now transformed into an infernal outpost. Very few humans have escaped Diablo's rule: some have prostrated themselves before him or joined his cults, while others have been corrupted to become horrifying Commanders of Terror, raised to rival the powers of the Underworld itself. The mysterious bond that binds us to Diablo will make us both a threat to him and a figure particularly exposed to his influence, and now that the greatest champions of Sanctuary are no longer with us, it will be up to us to decide what to become to take back the home that was taken from us.
The game world reflects this desperate situation. Sanctuary isn't on the eve of an apocalypse, it's already living it: humanity has fallen from grace, and Westeros is the heart of Diablo's reign of terror, an eerie wasteland shaped by the desperation and resilience of those who struggle to see another dawn. It's Sanctuary itself that's unstable, because Diablo is reshaping it through terror, resulting in a procedural landscape where terrain, points of interest, monsters, and rewards can change every time we return. Ruins tell of what's been lost, corruption shows the current rule of the Lord of Terror, and the looming forces of the Underworld anticipate what's to come.
With the world under the yoke of Diablo, survival no longer passes through villages or the conquest of strongholds: instead, we will have to build a caravan of allies who travel with us through the incinerated lands. They will be merchants and loyal companions together, a growing community made up of fascinating characters with pasts, goals and traumas matured by surviving the Sanctuary of Diablo. Among the faces shown are a former Sister of the Invisible Eye and a Marauder Goblin without a home, looking for direction in a world where greed has lost all purpose.
On the class front, three have been revealed, the first of a list that will be revealed little by little. The Demon Hunter returns to torment the forces of hell with dual crossbows, striking from the shadows and leaping onto the battlefield to annihilate prey. The Monk brings martial perfection back to Sanctuary, stomping demons to death and summoning sacred power to punish anyone who stands in his way. Finally, the Plague Knight debuts, the living embodiment of death, who roams the battlefield spreading disease and pestilence and then consuming them and gaining power. More details on combat, progression, and build possibilities will come later.
The items deserve a separate chapter, on which the team aims to ensure readability, memorability and a value that makes them coveted for hundreds of hours. The declared inspiration is that of Diablo II: they are experimenting with the requirements of the characteristics on the equipment, the inventory returns to play a key role in the management of the arsenal with the bulkiest objects occupying multiple compartments, and the set equipment returns. The creation system is described as rich and in-depth, inspired by the approach seen in Lord of Hatred, and includes Runes and Runewords in the style of the second chapter. Everything stems from a renewed attention to the depth, clarity and identity of the objects, openly indebted to the previous chapters of the series.
It should be remembered that Diablo V is still in the very early stages of development and that this reveal represents only the beginning of a long conversation with the community. Starting in 2027, regular updates are planned that will allow you to closely follow the progress, the ideas that drive the production and the features that will take shape along the way: involving the public right away, Blizzard explains, serves to listen and understand what excites you most, and then apply this information to your decisions and build a game that respects what fans love, while giving the series a genuinely renewed direction.
In the meantime, the announcement did not come alone. The Amazon class will make its entrance in Diablo IV in the first half of 2027, while an animated adaptation of the brand will soon land on Netflix: this is the first fruit of the collaboration between the company and the streaming giant, with the promise that it will not remain the only one. Diablo IV will therefore remain the flagship title of the saga for almost three more years, while Diablo II received its first major update in twenty-five years earlier this year. In short, the genre continues to see the series in a leading position, and in Blizzard the enthusiasm for what is to come is evident.
We leave you to the announcement trailer, fully dubbed in Italian; enjoy!
