The horror of Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE arrives in March, new trailer

KOEI TECMO Europe and Team NINJA today announced that FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, a remake of the Japanese horror classic previously known as Project Zero 2, will arrive on March 12, 2026. To celebrate the announcement, a new trailer has been released, which also coincides with the opening of pre-orders.

This remake completely reworks the second chapter of the saga, originally released in 2003, improving graphics, audio and control system. The developers promise a greater level of detail, more refined textures and contrasts of light and shadow optimized to generate a more eerie and realistic atmosphere than ever before. The sound sector has also been reworked to offer spatial audio, designed to immerse us in the action and make us perceive the presence of spirits in a more intense way.

The apparitions will not only frighten us, but will appear when we least expect it. They might, for example, try to grab our hands while trying to pick up an object, or lurk in the shadows. We will have to react quickly to escape these attacks; If we fail, we will suffer damage to the spiritual power and be forced to face intense fights.

Of course, the characteristic mechanics of the Camera Obscura return, revised to offer a richer combat and exploration experience. We will still be able to attack the apparitions by taking pictures of them and, by focusing on the target, we will inflict greater damage. After dealing enough damage, it will be possible to activate the status of "Shutter Opportunity", which will allow us to inflict significant damage with a single photo for a short time, as long as we have great precision and the right timing.

By taking a photo at the perfect time, we will activate the "Fatal Frame", which will interrupt the opponent's actions by stunning him. If we manage to activate the Fatal Frame while we are in the Shutter Opportunity state, we will activate the "Fatal Time": a limited period within which we can take multiple photos in quick succession to inflict enormous damage.

The Camera Obscura will also benefit from new features such as fire, zoom, and filters to deal with spirits in Minakami Village. By lighting the fire points on the screen, we will lock on to the target (more illuminated points equal greater damage). Zooming in will allow us to attack a spirit from afar without being detected, or to widen the view to attack multiple targets at the same time. It will also be useful in exploration, to photograph specific elements. Finally, by changing the filters according to the situation, we will discover the mysteries that surround us; the "Perceptual Filter", for example, will increase the range of dashes in combat and, during exploration, will reproduce past actions by exploiting residual memories.

Among the new gameplay, we will have the opportunity to hold Mayu's hand, thus recovering health and spiritual power. However, we will have to be careful: if Mayu is in danger, she could trip and fall, forcing us to help her get up. It will also be possible to collect and equip charms, each with different beneficial effects. By expanding the "Charm Bag", we will increase the number of charms we can equip simultaneously.

The game will be dubbed in Japanese with Italian texts.

We leave you with the new trailer and a set of new images; enjoy!
