Microsoft announces that it is working with AMD on the next generation of Xbox

With an announcement on X/Twitter, Xbox president Sarah Bond officially confirmed that Microsoft has signed a new multi-year strategic partnership with AMD. The agreement will jointly build processors for a whole range of future devices, including next-generation Xbox consoles.

Bond's announcement outlines a clear vision for the future of gaming according to Microsoft: to allow us to play the games we want, with whom we want and wherever we are. For this reason, the company is investing in a new line of hardware that will not be limited to home consoles alone, but will also include portable devices, PCs, clouds and accessories. Collaboration with AMD is critical to the realization of this integrated ecosystem.

The goal of the partnership is to push technological innovation in the video game industry. Together, the two companies aim to create the next generation of graphics innovation to unlock a higher level of visual quality and more immersive gaming experiences, all aided by the power of artificial intelligence. A key point made by Bond is that all of this will be done while maintaining full compatibility with the existing Xbox game library, which is crucial for owners of current consoles.

The collaboration between Xbox and AMD, on the other hand, is nothing new. The current Xbox Series X|S mount a custom processor and graphics card based on AMD architecture, just as the previous Xbox One used an AMD Jaguar APU. This continuity represents a solid basis for future development, unlike past generations where technology partners had changed several times: the first Xbox used an Intel CPU and an Nvidia GPU, while the Xbox 360 was equipped with an IBM processor and an ATI GPU.

Bond also reiterated that this strategy aims to build a gaming platform that is always with us, without tying us to a single store or a single device. This is also part of the close collaboration with the Microsoft Windows team, to ensure that Windows is confirmed as the reference platform for gaming.

"The next generation of Xbox is coming to life, and this is just the beginning," Bond concluded. "We can't wait to show you what's in store for the future."

And we can't wait to find out! We also remember that Xbox Series X was announced in June 2019, with a launch then took place at the end of 2020. We now have the new hardware announced in June 2025, which could indicate a launch in late 2026. We look forward to finding out more!
