XBOX and Blizzard announce an open world shooter of StarCraft, arrives in 2030 on XBOX and PC

The rumors were true: a new StarCraft is officially on the way, although not as an RTS. The announcement came from the stage of BlizzCon 2026 from the mouth of Dan Hay, who unveiled a new chapter simply titled StarCraft, but coming only in 2030. Blizzard also confirmed that the game will be available on XBOX and PC, without mentioning other platforms.

The biggest surprise concerns the nature of the project, because this time we will not have to deal with the strategy that made the brand famous: it will in fact be an open world shooter. A clear change of course for a franchise that had not seen an unprecedented release since StarCraft: Remastered, which arrived in 2017.

The presentation was entrusted with a purely cinematic trailer, without any gameplay sequence: a predictable choice, given the distance that separates us from the launch. The footage follows the training and dressing of a Space Marine of the Terran Dominion, accompanied by a motivational speech focused on the elimination of the Zerg. Our unnamed hero is then shown in battle against the Zerg, before a detachment that takes us aboard a Dominion ship, where his devastated and bloody armor is cleaned and repaired, but without its occupant.

The voiceover is that of the Dominion's propaganda, which explains how crucial conflict is to the salvation of humanity: the sons and daughters of the Dominion answered the call in their time of need, their courage held the line, and their sacrifice guaranteed another day of life. Now that call comes to us, with an invitation to carry on its strength at any cost.

This is not the first time that Blizzard has tried to push the brand towards more action territories. In the 2000s, the company had shown, redesigned and reworked StarCraft Ghost for a long time, a project that has remained legendary more for its vaporware nature than for anything else, along the lines of what happened to Duke Nukem Forever. The protagonist of that game that was never released, the Ghost Nova, had to settle for a role as a secondary character in StarCraft 2 and the leading role in some novels related to the universe of the series. The new shooter, apparently, is not connected to that old attempt.

In the meantime, the return of the series had been in the air for some time: already last January there was talk of a probable presentation of the game during this year's convention, while in the previous weeks a rumor indicated NEXON as a possible buyer of the intellectual property development rights by Blizzard. In his speech, meanwhile, Hay told of his passion for working at Blizzard and the enthusiasm for the return of such a beloved series.

We now leave you with the announcement trailer, complete with Italian dubbing; enjoy!
