The Xbox One: a bit of info from Cologne

MX Team is back from the trip, an experience during which we could see and try many games: in the coming days I will talk about those who have hit, but in the meantime we would like to mention some info on Xbox One collected during a meeting with Albert Brush, head of Xbox Product Planning area.

Brush conducted a demonstration of Xbox One , with an emphasis on more social/characteristics related to gaming and answering some of our questions. We list below the most important/interesting points emerged from the meeting, hoping it can help you improve your knowledge of the console.

Windows 8 Interface-like -as was already known, the console interface owes much to the "Windows 8" style (previous known as Metro, abandoned for lawsuits name): presents a series of horizontally-scrolling tile, and entering in all areas-friends list, goals, app, etc-graphic style, fonts and the various elements of the interface resembles those of Windows 8 app. These recent images offer a glimpse at the interface.

Automatic Login -Xbox Kinect uses One to log the player who sees framed, of course only if it was previously recorded in the console by storing their image and voice print. The console will start on a dashboard-but we should call it Xbox Home-"neutral" without any user logged in, and only sees the player (recognising both expect the voice), it automatically logs showing the top left gamerpics and customizing the Xbox Home with goals, friends, games and other data. As with all features of the console, of course this feature is deactivated if you do not want, leaving the normal access via controller.

Multi-user -Like on the Xbox 360, the Xbox One also allows multiple users from logging on at the console, to a maximum of six in this case. But here's the thing is handled with more craftiness: all users logged gamerpics are shown next to each other in the upper left corner of the screen, and each can invoke with the single voice their information. For example, if a family member and I have logged in at the same time, if he exclaimed "Xbox, achievements" the console will display my goals, while if it will show my family its just to have it recognised vocally; Ditto for friends lists and more. And the same will be true in the case of use of the controller: If we both logged in but we have only one controller, regardless of who holds the console will know what kind of player he is and then will show achievements, friends, etc. of that specific player.

Gamerpic HD -player images are Now in Full HD: whether they are taken from the Live or whether it's photos taken with Kinect, are large and extremely defined. In the friends list, those that are still on the Xbox 360 will be shown, rather than zoomati and extremely grainy, with their gamerpic baby positioned at the Centre of a colored box, much bigger because it thought for the gamerpics HD.

Friends & Followers -as already known, the Xbox One extends to 1000 the number of friends that we have listed. Of these we will see status updates, objectives, and we invite them titles played in co-op games and competitive. But as if that wasn't enough, there will be an additional feature: the follow . Just like on Twitter and Facebook, people who don't know will decide to "follow us" to keep an eye on the titles that we played, goals unlocked and our other activities, but we must have them in friends list, so how we can follow other players, maybe gaming celebrities, developers or other players of whom we want to follow the activity. Of course all this is fully customizable by players, so anyone can decide what show it to friends that the follower, what keep hidden and so forth. In contrast to the friends list of followers is unlimited.

IR Blaster -you should have already heard this term, talking about the Xbox One . For "IR Blaster" means the ability to simulate the signal sent from the remote to control a device. The console will be able to control our lighting television, channel changing and adjusting the volume, or even to command decoder and audio systems. This will be doable in two ways: the main one is via Kinect, which can "shoot" infrared signal in the room making it bounce on the walls to reach the devices you want to control (even if these are positioned above or behind the Kinect. If that doesn't work, then the console has a special port to connect an IR Blaster cable , whose end will be attached in front of the infrared receiver of the device to be controlled. Brush said that the console will be able to command a great deal of television, at least all the models of the most famous brands, while for the other devices you are still seeing how many and which make it compatible. This list will be constantly expanded over time by using the appropriate updates.

Xbox, dismiss -as we know the console accepts voice commands for a large number of functions: start-up, shut-down, friends list, goals, switch applications and much more. But what happens if you figure out a command to another or if we wanted to cancel the command given by someone else in our room? It's very simple: no commands are instant, but once understood, it pops up a small window to wait for a few seconds before they are executed. During this time, simply exclaim "Xbox, dismiss" (or something like "Xbox, cancel" in Italian, we presume), to cancel the current command.

Switch Games -Another feature is the ability to switch on the fly from a game to an app without having to save your progress. Brush showed us how this is true even between the game and the game, clearly if the game that you want to go digital or both is to place in the reader. And this is possible simply by speaking the name of the game: If we're playing Dead Rising 3 and we want to take a break, passing a little bit Ryse, just say "Xbox, open Ryse" and will be moved on the title Crytek. Then just say "Xbox, open Dead Rising 3" to return to the previous game exactly at the point where we left off.

Support USB drives -the console will support the use of external USB drives, at least for storing downloadable content, profile data and saves. It is unclear for now whether they will be used for the installation of games.

Avatar -In wide demonstration there was no trace of the avatars, indication of how their role will be significantly reduced with the new console. However us brush ensures that these will still be there, even if we wanted to clarify where and how.

Custom soundtracks -Xbox One supports custom soundtracks in games, just as Xbox 360. This will be done via the Xbox Music feature, which will allow us to rip music play by our CD that those downloaded from Microsoft's music service. During the games we can even do the "snap" side of the earpiece, to change more easily traced.

Horizontal only -this there we talked about in a news a few days ago: the brush there confirmed that the console is not meant to be placed vertically and that his only permitted position is horizontal, so as not to occlude the lateral air intakes. And if you were curious about the console, here they dimensions: 33.5 x 27.5 x 8 cm.
