Xbox One: the Gold and the Home Console

Microsoft has published a new article that summarizes some of the features of the Xbox One in relation to Gold and subscriptions to our main console, defines "Home Console". It's largely things already said in the past, but let's recap here if there were du escaped.

When buying Xbox One, we will make a short set-up to configure it with our profile and set it as our "Home Console": it is a way to tell Microsoft " This is my main console, i want all of my purchases are tied to it ."

On this console login will be us who other members of our family, and if we have acquired digital licences, they will be able to use them without restrictions on the same console. If we go to a friend's House, we can connect on its console with our profile and from there to play all our games (which, remember, will be playable immediately without waiting for the completion of the download). This isn't really news, since already today on Xbox 360 titles in digital delivery as the Live Arcade or Games on Demand are handled according to the same principle.

Represents a novelty, on the other hand, the fact that, if from the console to a friend buying a game with our profile, this will be automatically linked to our Home Console: when we scollegheremo, our friend will no longer have access to that game while at home everyone can use it to play. The difference compared to Xbox 360 lies in the fact that today the games are connected to the console on which are downloaded the first time, while on Xbox One will always be linked to Home Console of the profile that made the purchase. For a game bought digitally worth therefore always the following rules:

  • Will always be playable by any profile on the Home Console of the user who made the purchase
  • On other consoles will be playable only by the user who made the purchase
All this regardless of where you made the purchase and the first download. The article also doesn't say, but we assume that, in the event of malfunction or other change, we will make a new Xbox One our main console/Home Console, moving then on it all right that we had on the previous one. It remains to be seen whether this step is possible only every N months, as now happens with transfers of Xbox 360 licenses when buying a new console.

Another novelty of the Xbox One is also the concept of "Home Gold": If you own an Xbox One is a Live Gold subscriber, then all profiles that access on the same console can benefit of privilege Gold how to play online, access exclusive App Gold, use the DVR functionality, and so on. Do not use more then buying a subscription for each user, but just one for all.

Microsoft has also taken to clarify that, if we also have an Xbox 360, you can remain connected simultaneously on both consoles with the same profile. our Gold membership on Xbox 360 will be done also on Xbox One.
