Xbox One: details about the matchmaking system for online games

Major Nelson provides new details about the features of the Xbox One, and this time at the center of the debate is the new matchmaking system, all that structure that moves the multiplayer section of each game. The new architecture will be extremely different from what is there now on Xbox 360, based on Trueskill system that calculates the player's skills: see below for what has emerged from the speech dealt with Chad Gibson, Principle Group Program Manager for Xbox Live gaming capabilities, and Mike Lavin, Senior Global Product Marketing Manager for Xbox Live.

Asynchronous Matchmaking

  • Smart Match, this is the name of one of the features of the new matchmaking system, eliminates downtime when you are waiting to be able to participate in an online game. While the game will choose the best match for us, we can completely switch to a different activity, such as update us with an app or read anything in particular. Once a suitable match is found, the Xbox One will notify us and we will decide to go back to the game: in practice, the system of multi-task saw the presentation of the console, or hold start more things simultaneously-as a film and a Skype chat-and switch from one to the other at will.
  • Smart Match allows you to abandon the model of games based on the connection with the host to switch to a model based on cloud system, in this way, even in games with an extremely low online population will quickly find the perfect match and play. With the current system, a title with few players can take minutes and minutes of research before finding a suitable match. In any case, the system adapts well to most popular games.
  • Smart Match goes to Beacons, or to play with friends in certain games or to meet certain hours: the matchmaking will also take into account these requests and will try to mate with friends who already know.
  • Although options are available to search for players of the same age, to a specific geographical area or who speak the same language, the new architecture, with time, will try to avoid the fragmentation of the population of a game within too many playlist, trying to bring together as many players as possible that share the same search options. This function will be useful for those less popular games.
  • Before you start the matchmaking may be possible a series of various options to search for the game you want: the way we play, the way we relate with others, our playlist and favorite maps and much more.

Online reputation-based Matchmaking

  • With the Xbox One was created a new system of player's reputation that goes to improve what already exists on the Xbox 360. This will make it easier to highlight those players with which we do not like to be in the team or against.
  • For those players who misbehave and are viewed so by most of the other players, there will be real consequences.
  • The system in which we can return a feedback to the player has changed: no longer a kind of list/poll but more a space where they can leave their opinion really. It also posted a list of how many times the player has been silenced or locked by others.
  • The more you play and you will spend hours online with a proper and polite behavior, plus his reputation will improve. A bit like when in auto insurance less you have more accidents you are entitled to receive bonuses in annual payments.
  • You will set three levels of reputation: green, when the player has an excellent reputation and is therefore a good player; Yellow, when instead the manners too often turns unpleasant episodes; Red, when the player's attitude will harm the rest of the community.
  • Even if you receive negative feedback (imagine how 4-5 times a month), their reputations remain in status. It takes several reports before reaching the Yellow and red alert.
  • Bad players will be labeled publicly as "to be avoided", with this endorsement on their profile and then immediately recognizable. Microsoft wants to make online gaming a better place.
  • Smart Match also takes into account the reputation of players: as well as of people with Green status will be paired with others of the same level, so even more rude players of Live will be coupled between them. In this way, will be to order and get the stumbling alone.
  • Before a player can reach the Red level and can be labeled, the Xbox Live team will send several warnings to try to change the person's conduct. If even after numerous warnings the attitude won't change, then you will go from Yellow to red and you will be shunned until it changes.

For now, but there are so many interesting points to discuss: we are confident that in the coming months we will have to talk about the new matchmaking system Smart Match.
