Bungie postpones Marathon to a later date

Marathon no longer has a date: Bungie's extraction shooter, previously scheduled for February 23rd, has been postponed to a later date. The decision was communicated through a post on the game's official website, where the development team explained that it needed more time to work on the title following the feedback received during the Alpha testing phase. A new release date has not been announced at the moment.

In the press release, the developers explained that the messages from the players were "loud and clear" and that they decided to take them very seriously. The test allowed the team to focus on what will make the game a unique and compelling experience: survival under pressure, mystery and lore at every turn, raid-like endgame challenges, and the FPS combat that has always defined Bungie's genre and style. This extra time will be used to enhance the experience, making it more intense and high-risk, as a title like Marathon requires.

Bungie has also outlined the key areas it will focus on during this additional development period. The goal is to improve the survival aspect of the game, introducing clashes with a more challenging and engaging AI and making our games more satisfying, with new types of loot and dynamic events. Combat will become more tense and strategic and we will be able to enjoy greater visual fidelity, as well as a richer environmental narrative to interact with. The team is also aiming for a darker atmosphere, in line with the original trilogy.

Finally, social experiences will be enhanced, improving the experience for those who play alone or in pairs and introducing proximity chat. Bungie is planning further tests behind closed doors in the coming months and has promised that it will return to talk about the progress made on the game over the course of next fall.

In short, it seems to be substantial and important changes to the game, which will take several months to be implemented and tested by players. It is therefore likely that the game will not see the light of day before spring 2026, and that perhaps Bungie decides to release it in the Early Access formula so that it can improve it with the support of players. We will keep you informed!
