Borderlands 4 reveals gameplay: trailer and all the news

As promised, tonight Gearbox revealed the gameplay of Borderlands 4, which proved to be full of news for fans of the franchise, especially for those who were disappointed by the third episode of the series. The studio has released a new gameplay trailer, which you can find below, and a long demonstration that you can view here.

Among the novelties of the game, which we remind you has been brought forward to September 12, we discover that this is set on the planet Kairos, a world devastated by a cosmic catastrophe in which we will have to face a tyrant known as The Timekeeper, who controls the population with mental implants and an army of synthetic soldiers. Here we will be able to play as four new Vault Hunters, each with unique abilities, and fight against new threats, including a mechanized alien race.

The new protagonists are:

  • Aether, the Elemental Siren - Aether takes the power of the Siren to a new level: we will be able to master fire, frost, corrosion and electricity with skills that can be combined with each other. His "Elemental Overload" skill allows us to unleash devastating multi-elemental storms, adapting us to the type of enemy and the situation. Perfect for those who love remote control and pure scenic effect.

  • Lark, the symbiotic Beastmaster - Lark is a new interpretation of the beastmaster concept: it will be linked to shape-shifting alien creatures that we can temporarily fuse to our body. With the "Symbiotic Frenzy" skill we can change set-up in real time, transforming ourselves into fast and ferocious war machines, or stay at a distance and let our teammate devastate the field.

  • Conrad, the Modular Engineer - Conrad is an expert in war technology. We will be able to deploy customizable battle modules, including turrets, drones and support barriers. Its "Modular Combat Rig" ability will allow us to build on the field in real time, adapting our strategy as the battle evolves. An ideal choice for those who love tactical control and teamwork.

  • Nira, the Holographic Mimic - Nira plays with the minds of enemies. We will be able to create decoys, illusions and booby traps to confuse and destabilize each clash. With "Phantom Mirage", we can double ourselves, teleport or place clones that explode or turn into living machine guns. Perfect for a sneaky and unpredictable playstyle.

Among the main innovations of the gameplay, we will be able to take advantage of an enhanced movement system with double jump, slide, dodge and a holographic grappling hook to explore the environment in a more dynamic way. The loot system has also been revised: now we will be able to combine parts of weapons from different manufacturers to create custom equipment, while grenades and heavy weapons will work on reload instead of with ammunition, encouraging more frequent use.

While Borderlands 4 continues to be a non-traditional open world, Gearbox has also promised a smoother and more interconnected experience, with load-free transitions between zones, dynamic events, and the ability to spawn vehicles instantly. The game will support cooperative up to four players, allowing us to face missions and boss fights in company, and will have cross-play support between all platforms at launch.

As for the improvements compared to Borderlands 3, the team promises a more focused experience with a more mature narrative tone, with less forced humor and a villain, the Timekeeper, with a darker and more believable character. The story will focus on more structured themes, reducing the excessive chaos of the previous chapter. The AI of the enemies will be more reactive and the boss fights will be more balanced and less chaotic. The new Vault Hunters, then, will be very different from each other, adapting to various styles of play.

We leave you to the video: enjoy!
