Rumor Control: Xbox One and the exclusive of Silent Hills

In the last few hours a new rumor is making more passionate videogame forums around the world because of the implications that would have if it were true: according to the YouTube channel The Know , Microsoft would be in discussion with Konami to acquire the exclusive Xbox One of Silent Hills , the project apparently aborted Kojima and Del Toro. Initially we had decided not to offer the news as we always do with those we deem too weak or improbable, but we decided to publish an article to explain why don't we consider plausible.

First, outside of the rumor itself, there is a recent history of Silent Hills .  If you follow MondoPlay or other sites dedicated to the Sony console, you are surely aware of the recent news about the game: after the "divorce" between Konami and Hideo Kojima, Guillermo Del Toro announced they are no longer involved in the project and later Konami itself has confirmed the cancellation. So if even a Silent Hills were resurrected, it would not be the same game that should have been initially because they would see the involvement of its authors, the same ones who created the beautiful-now removed from PSN demo "P.T.".  And even if a new agreement were to pull back to barca Del Toro, we doubt that the same can happen with Kojima also because of its current relations with Konami.

Then there are declarations of YouTuber themselves highly unrealistic and improbable. The first is that the game would be ready for 80% so that, if it was confirmed the exclusive Xbox, would arrive in stores in early 2016. The development of Silent Hills project was not actually even started if not in the prototype phase, and this is also confirmed by recent statements by Del Toro and Norman Reedus, the actor who would interpret the protagonist, which at the time of the cancellation of the game have talked about what were their intentions with the title and what they wanted to achieve : have not ever talked as a project now in the home stretch of arrival, but as something still being started.

The other statement difficult, indeed impossible, to digest is the amount that Microsoft would have proposed to Konami to capture the unique, according to The Know the order of billions of dollars . Now, maybe the guys in The Know have not clear what videogame industry budgets, but we help you to put things into perspective. Typically, the production budget of a AAA title can go between 50 million (the first Halo) reaching 200 million (some of the Call of Duty) until you touch the peak of 265 million dollars spent by Rockstar for GTA V. For those who are unfamiliar with mathematics, 265 million has about a quarter of a billion; overturning the concept, with one billion dollars you could finance the production of four games the size of GTA V, or even a dozen large AAA productions.

With this information in hand, you can make yourself the appropriate conclusions: it seems possible that MS spend "billions" to acquire the exclusive rights of a franchise like that (which, on balance, does not generate commercial successes for many years), when much less would be enough to fund the entire production of fior fiore of multiannual development AAA securities? When the House of Redmond spent similar figures, did to acquire Minecraft and all the study Mojang, but here we're talking about a game that generates high monthly profits from years on many platforms.

In the light of all these facts, we believe the rumor " Microsoft acquires the exclusive of Silent Hills " very unlikely if not completely pie in the air. Of course there is always the remote possibility that there is something real and that the authors of the rumor we have embroidered over by adding data completely fictional, but this of course does that subtract from the reliability of the news.

For our part, we recommend that you do not hold your breath waiting for E3 and not to expect an announcement that, in all likelihood, will never come.
