Microsoft announced at Gamescom the new Disc-to-Digital feature, which will allow owners of physical games on XBOX One and XBOX Series X to get the digital version of supported titles for free by simply inserting the disc into the console.

How Disc-to-Digital works

• By inserting a compatible disc into an XBOX One or Series X and launching the game, you get the digital license of the title.

• The license remains tied to the physical disc, not to the account: if the disc is lent, the digital licence "follows" the disc.

• The disc continues to function normally even after you get the digital version.

• When supported, digital gaming can also be played on PC via Xbox Play Anywhere or in the cloud via Xbox Cloud Gaming.

• Thousands of titles will be available at launch, with progressive expansion.

• Not all games will be compatible: publishers will decide which titles to enable for conversion.

• For now, the program only concerns XBOX One and XBOX Series X games; there is no confirmation on future support for XBOX 360 or original Xbox discs.
