State of Decay 3 finally shows itself during the XBOX Game Showcase
The trailer confirmed that all we saw is real gameplay, captured directly from the Unreal Engine 5 game engine, without the use of CGI. The over-the-shoulder shots show the actual game camera, offering a glimpse of the level of quality Undead Labs has achieved for moment-to-moment action. In addition to combat, details have emerged about claimable settlements and new dynamic threats called Plague Nests, dungeon-like areas that react to our actions and require coordinated strategies, both solo and in co-op.
The Plague Nests represent the evolution of the Plague Hearts of State of Decay 2: they are not simple static targets, but real enemy hubs with different "personalities" that influence behavior, growth and approach. We will have to evaluate whether to face them immediately or manage them over time, because the consequences in the game world are real and the danger advances even if we choose not to act. Each game can have different configurations, ensuring variety between sessions.
The combat system has been completely overhauled: now we will have two attack buttons, one quick and one powerful, allowing us to combine blows, repel enemies and dodge with greater fluidity. The variety of zombies has also been deepened: common enemies show distinct behaviors based on the level of decomposition or the presence of armor, while the arrival of a "Freak" can completely turn the scenario upside down. The challenge increases when we find ourselves in numerical superiority or have to protect a teammate.
The game environment has been expanded significantly: the map in State of Decay 3 is about four times larger than a single map in State of Decay 2 and will be fully explorable from the very first moment. This additional space supports new exploration dynamics, settlement expansion, and strategic movement, with a renewed emphasis on risk/reward when looting. The most dangerous areas, such as the Plague Nests, hide the best loot, but will require preparation and coordination.
The construction of settlements becomes a shared experience: in cooperative up to four players, we can develop a single camp together or expand on several bases, up to three, customizing each one according to the objectives of the group or individual. The game system supports both coordinated progress and the freedom to act autonomously, allowing us to specialize structures according to our priorities, from the production of food and water to the manufacture of ammunition and explosives.
The shared world introduces an asynchronous multiplayer mode: we can enter the same game at different times, contributing to the story, building structures or recruiting enclaves of NPCs with their own desires and perspectives. These factions can become allies, offering new opportunities for collaboration and recruitment, expanding the network of settlements, and strengthening our presence in the game world.
The "do-it-yourself" culture profoundly influences weapon crafting: common items such as machetes can be modified with serrated blades, welded iron bars, or other visual and functional customizations. Each change comes with trade-offs, such as greater dispelling power with higher stamina consumption, leaving us free to adapt the loadout to our playstyle. This approach also extends to structures and recipes that can be unlocked over time.
Exploration and looting remain at the heart of the survival experience: we will have to balance the risk of venturing into dangerous areas with the need to find essential resources for the community. Undead Labs aims to reward those who stray from the beaten path, including moments of environmental storytelling and unique opportunities for those who dare to go further.
