Purple Ray Studio today unveiled a new gameplay trailer for Koshmar: The Last Reverie, its narrative action-adventure in development for consoles and PC. The footage gave us a deeper look at the game world, exploration mechanics, and storyline starring Violet, a lucid dreamer caught between two realities ravaged by a mysterious sleep plague.

The title, inspired by works such as Alice: Madness Returns, combines fast-paced action-adventure gameplay with roguelite and RPG elements, all set in a retrofuturistic world inspired by nineteenth-century Central Europe. The gothic and steampunk aesthetic is rendered with artistic hand-drawn brushstrokes, creating an atmosphere suspended between dream and nightmare. We'll have to explore environments that range from surreal to dark, facing platforming and puzzles as we navigate between the real and dream worlds.

Our choices will have a direct impact on Violet's mental state: we will be able to let ourselves be lulled by illusions or embrace madness, with consequences that also reverberate in the real world. The combat system offers several adrenaline-pumping variants, based on Violet's skills, upgrades and skills, allowing us to adopt play styles inspired by dreams or nightmares. We will also have to face the Nightmare Rifts, replayable roguelite sections that will test our mental balance, influencing the evolution of the game.

The narrative is divided into multiple endings, where the decisions made during the adventure will shape the surrounding world and the fate of the protagonist. Purple Ray Studio, led by Co-Founder and Creative Director Kornelia Błażyńska – narrator of the trailer – has been working on the project for over two years with the aim of offering a deep experience, both in terms of world-building and innovative mechanics.
