At the presentation event organized in collaboration with Xbox, the guys at 4A Games officially unveiled METRO 2039, the already highly anticipated new chapter of the acclaimed post-apocalyptic saga, announcing that it will arrive next winter and promising to take us back to the dark and claustrophobic depths of Moscow, with a full-bodied single player campaign, strongly focused on storytelling and psychological horror.

The events of METRO 2039 will transport us 25 years after the nuclear conflict that devastated the planet. The various underground factions that populate the Moscow tunnels have now unified under the banner of Novoreich, an iron-fisted regime led by an old acquaintance of ours: the legendary Spartan named Hunter, now self-proclaimed Führer. Although the new leader promises salvation and a future return to the surface, we will actually find ourselves exploring a society oppressed by authoritarianism, constantly manipulated by disinformation and propaganda.

In this tense climate, to say the least, we will take on the role of the Stranger, a recluse haunted by violent dayhallucinations who will be forced to embark on a harrowing journey to return to that underground nightmare he had sworn to abandon forever. Unlike in the past, our hero will be a fully voiced protagonist, a novelty that the developers have introduced to ensure an even more visceral level of immersion within the game's intricate plot.

During the showcase, which was attended by key figures from the development team such as Jon Bloch, Andriy Shevchenko and Pavel Ulmer, a long six-minute video containing the first gameplay sequences was shown. From the images it is clear the intention to keep the soul of the franchise intact: we will find ourselves surviving in disturbing environments rendered with extraordinary visual fidelity, taking advantage of our iconic equipment, including makeshift weapons and the inevitable wristwatch, while we will face lethal mutants in heart-pounding combat.

Finally, the authors were keen to emphasize how METRO 2039 has been profoundly shaped by the recent and dramatic events related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Divided between the offices in Kiev and Malta, the 4A Games team has infused the title with the spirit of resilience of its people, focusing the experience on the weight of choices, the consequences of our actions and the very high cost necessary to secure a future. An adventure that, while born from a strong Ukrainian perspective, will keep one hundred percent intact the DNA and atmosphere of the authentic METRO experience.
