Xbox at GDC 2026: news for backwards compatibility, new Xbox Mode for PC in April

During the Xbox Developer Summit held at GDC 2026, Microsoft's Jason Ronald took a look at Xbox's past, confirming that the next Xbox will be able to let us play 4 different generations of Xbox titles, something that no PC is capable of doing, but not only.

Ronald also announced that, ahead of the brand's twenty-fifth anniversary, the Xbox Game Preservation team, responsible for backward compatibility, will reveal "new ways" to revive some of the most iconic works in Xbox history; among these, hints have been glimpsed about the return of games such as Fuzion Frenzy and Panzer Dragoon.

Very interesting news are also coming on the user experience front, with the aim of breaking down the barriers between PC and consoles. The intent is to foster increasingly seamless cross-play between devices and offer developers a unified path to reach more users while reducing development costs. With this in mind, the Xbox Mode will make its debut on Windows 11 in April: this mode will allow us to easily switch from productivity to gaming, offering us a full-screen experience optimized for use with the controller, taking advantage of the entire Xbox experience and while maintaining the typical Windows openness.
