Bethesda announces the first two DLC of The Evil Within, The Assignment and The Consequence

Bethesda announced today the first two Add-ons of the three that will extend the gameplay experience of survival horror The Evil Within. The first package, named after The Assignment , will be released in early 2015 and will be the first two DLC where we will play the role of the mysterious detective partners Castellanos, Juli Kidman. It was also announced the name of the second DLC, The Consequence , on which more details will be revealed in 2015. It also announced a third DLC whose protagonist is even the fearsome Guardian, for friends "dark safe".

Curious to learn more? We propose an interesting interview to the game director of The Assignment and The Consequence , John Johanas, concerning the development of DLC in question:

Some crucial questions concern Juli Kidman. How do I create a balance between responding to these questions and to maintain an aura of mystery?

Good question! We designed the DLC like this: Although Juli is enigmatic in the main game, there are other mysteries about the world and the characters that might be revealed as her. On the other hand, is a decidedly "aware" of their situation.

At the time of conception we worked by making a list of things that we wanted to leave ambiguous and those which would have been rather widespread. We definitely some unsolved mystery, but it is a little light on the history of Ruvik, on the STEM and other characters, asking more questions – and providing the same number of answers – about Juli and its mission.

Can you tell us what suggestions you gave Mikami-san on the direction of the content?

Mikami-san helped especially with the way forward. It's easy to get distracted by a thousand things you want to do, is new in integration to the main game. He understands when you fly near the road, and makes you notice immediately. There were some key points that asked us to observe, but which could give the impression of our creativity. The goal was to create something unique and special but that sensual satisfaction even fans of the main game.

In the direction of additional content on Juli Kidman, have drawn inspiration from other missions from DLC of other titles? If Yes, which ones?

I like the DLC and the planning stage was full of uncertainties. How many levels? Which rate? We add new weapons or hardware? We knew from the outset that the main character would be Kidman, therefore the DLC should be rich in content and not a simple "aesthetic tribute" to the character. My favorite DLC are the ones who offer the player a new point of view, while retaining a link with the main game.

Some DLC that may (or not) have influenced our work:

Dishonored: the dagger of Dunwall/the witches of Brigmore

Enslaved: Pigsy's Perfect 10

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction

There are specific areas of the game that inspired the main contents of the DLC?

Maybe two great sources of inspiration were the chapters 5 and 9. In Chapter 9 you had to discover the past by solving puzzles and exploring, two components that are often found in the DLC. In General, the adventure of Juli follows a story. Juli tends to "discover" the narrative by making certain actions and solving riddles. At the same time, the atmosphere and progression are similar to those of Chapter 5, where you are trapped in a very oppressive and the horror element is sovereign.

Having said that, I want to confirm that his meetings are diverse and different. You don't have to think "a copy of chapter XX". Even the horror element has a different cut! Juli experiences are more obscure, solitary and claustrophobic.

What is the difference in playing with Juli rather than with Sebastian?

From the character's point of view, I would say that you are much more lively than Sebastian in the main game! His story is a little more personal, and during the game there will be many jokes and comments.

Time level when they place the events of the DLC? Before, after or during the main story of the game?

Juli campaign we prepared with a "Rashomon"-style, in the sense that each person sees the same thing differently. In real life is like that, but try to imagine the delirium generated inside the STEM!
