Apparently the commercial results of Mass Effect: Andromeda did not reach the expectations of Electronic Arts, so much so that the company decided to "freeze" the series with Montreal, the studio responsible for the resize strongly BioWare last game, deciding not to entrust him with more new projects and turning it into a study in support of other teams BioWare.

This does not mean the death of Mass Effect: it is likely that EA wants to now focus on other series and franchise, then rebootare again the series when the time is more propitious times. It will probably take many years.
