Project Scorpio: revealed the specifications of the new console, all the details

As expected, Eurogamer and Digital Foundry they just revealed specs of Microsoft's new console Project Scorpio , coming at the end of the year, which acts as an enhanced version of Xbox One , with full compatibility with all games and accessories thereof. We discover together what has been revealed.

First, let's get naked and raw specifications. Project Scorpio will have a custom CPU consists of eight core 2.3 GHz x 86 custom ; by comparison, Xbox One has eight core Jaguar custom at 1.75 GHz. The GPU instead, heart graph of console, consists of 40 compute units in custom 1172MHz , an extremely high speed for a console that will allow the console to reach the objective of 6 TFLOP . Xbox One, by contrast, has 12 compute units to 853MHz.

Regarding the memory the magazine confirms what already leaked in the past, namely 12 GB of GDDR5 RAM , that we discover have a bandwidth of 326GB/s . The console will have a 2.5 "1 TB hard drive and an Ultra-HD Blu-ray drive player like Xbox One s. and how it will integrate an internal power supply. Everything else, as for input and output, is identical to the Xbox One S, so there is the port for the Kinect but retained the HDMI-in.

What does this mean? It's simple: the CPU is 30% faster than the Xbox One, while the GPU is four times (to be exact 4.6 times) more powerful . But what matters most is the large amount of ultrafast memory available, which will give developers the ability to take full advantage of the hardware capabilities: even considering that the OS reserves 4 GB RAM, 8 GB remain usable for games against the 5 GB Xbox One (slow). This means that the console can manage without the typical problems large assets of 4 k productions.

Eurogamer makes clear, however, that the CPU is not a new generation CPUS as many hoped (such as those of Zen class), but this is due to the need to maintain full compatibility with Xbox One: the new console is in effect a Xbox One strengthened , with important differences in memory management (missing the Esram) and in quantity and speed of RAM.

The magazine has also seen a game turn over: don't Force 7, as leaked, but a custom version of Forza Motorsport 6 adapted to take advantage of the new console. The demo turned at 4 k full and 60 fps with graphic settings equal to those of an Ultra-class PC , and was using only 60-70% of the console resources: everything went great and without delays. The site is more than confident that once we will get the games developed for the new console (which of course will run also on Xbox One), they will be more than stunning. Here's what it looked like the game in this version:

About the cooling system, finally, apparently the console will have a normal heatsink with fan, but inside it will work very differently: on the contact area of the chip there will be some water molecules, which are heated, will evaporate carrying steam at the tip of the gills, where later a fan from the custom design similar to that of a turbine cool down and recover circulating molecules. This will allow the console to have a highly efficient cooling system and reduced in size. The magazine also mentions that the entire hardware adopts an extremely innovative power distribution system that allows each component to only have the energy it needs, thereby reducing both energy consumption that overheating.

For now the information ends here, but we will not fail to publish insights and further updates: in the meantime, for most English speakers you, we leave you with an interesting video to Digital Foundry. Good vision!
