Destiny: a brief chat with Bungie

During the recent Games Week in Milan we had the opportunity to meet David Dague (Community Manager) and Eric Osborne (Senior Editor & Community Manager) to Bungie to talk a bit with them about Destiny, the long-awaited new title that will see the light in 2014. The two were completely buttoned on things not yet revealed why we couldn't wrest major revelations, but it's an interesting read for those of you who are waiting for the game.

MX: For today not much has transpired on the screenplay of Destiny, perhaps the thing that most other reminds us of Destiny is the Star War saga, we can expect to have a beginning, a middle and an end?

Bungie: Yes, the example is correct, we like to imagine it as a saga, a long journey. At the beginning one moves into its territory, it builds its hero who over time become legend. There is a beginning, a middle part and an end. The whole adventure that the character will be dotted with missions, mystery-solving goals, just like a normal single-player game. The story is very important to us, otherwise there would be no purpose in the game but only clashes between players. Actually the player as a particular character will have their own script to follow. If I give you an example, I like to imagine Destiny as " Game of Thrones " where interweave different stories and I hope that Destiny can have the same success.

MX: Will a story totally multiplayer or inside Destiny there will be single-player mission?

Bungie: In previous Bungie games there was a central character in the story and everyone would impersonate one. In Destiny each player creates their own character who relies on his choices. If one wants to complete private missions, will do but at the same time there will be public events in which you can participate. These events cannot be avoided because they occur in a dynamic space and involve other players, but you can pass through quietly pursuing the objectives of its history maybe climbing on a vehicle and leaving. The fact that the stories of several characters from getting caught gives me the opportunity to participate in its events by other players or simply no, passive and only think to my story.

MX: about public events, how is it managed the number of players who can participate? How many players can participate simultaneously at a public event?

Bungie: These details will emerge more and more approaching the launch of the game. For example this will surely "testable" in Beta that is about to start. At E3 in contemporary players were seven but obviously is a scalable number, not a thousand because it is not a situation in which we are interested.

MX: about the Beta, how and what worries you most in open access to your servers to thousands of players on a Beta version?

Bungie: Have the availability of a Beta is very important for us. We want that Destiny is an incredible experience launching and we can ensure that your version is the most robust possible only through the Beta program. We have the structure and people because this experience might work best, so we are not at all worried.

MX: Destiny will arrive both on current console on next-generation ones, players can expect the same experience, except for the graphics, on every platform?

Bungie: Destiny has been conceived and designed to be cross-platform and interact with different tools, such as Smartphones. Surely the Next-Gen Console will ensure a better graphics and a better immersion in the game, but the philosophy and the pillars underpinning of the gameplay are the same for everyone. The use of smartphones will see game stats, get in touch with your friends and organize meetings inside Destiny. The fundamentals of this there are already in the Bungie Mobile Application that many users are using now to exchange information about the game.
